A number of university vicechancellors told the committee that their institutions are being forced to offer remedial
maths classes for those who have not studied the subject at A-level--and even for those who have.
Adults aren't good at
maths because they don't need to use it in the workplace or their daily lives.
But maybe puzzles are sometimes too complicated as a way into
maths. Maybe an artist would be more interested in the beauty of fractals.
It's thought that what happens is that anxious thoughts compete with the memory resources we need to do
maths.'
Our initiative is supported by the Irish Mathematics Teachers' Association and aims to provide Irish schools with educational tools that make learning
maths more fun.
But we want to do more, which is where
Maths Year 2000 comes in.
The way I was taught
maths was probably representative of many experiences, being shown how to do a certain mathematical skill followed by lots of practice of that same skill.
The school created a
maths escape room, held a mass orienteering event where children had to use their
maths skills to get around, and had a 3D cube puzzle for the pupils to tackle.
The Cardiff High School pupil said he thought it was "pretty unrealistic" when his
maths tutor mother Theresa and father David, who works in IT, suggested he take the exams early.
Johnny, who is often referred to as "the man who revolutionised
maths and science for the BBC", shared with staff his ideas on how to inspire young learners to love
maths, in his own inimitable style.
A Treasury spokeswoman clarified the Chancellor's comments made during the Budget announcement, adding that he had not promised to make
Maths compulsory for A-level, but is looking to improve teaching of the subject across older age groups.
