To cause one to seem more impressive, attractive, favorable, or desirable. Sometimes it feels like all we're here for is to make the boss look good to the board of directors. When are we going to get some of the credit? The only reason he's being so generous is to make himself look good in front of Jennifer. The way he fumbled over his answers certainly didn't make him look good during that interview.

Cause someone to appear in a favorable light, as in Harry's staff does most of the important work and makes him look good.
