make a day/night/week of it

To spend all or most of a day, night, week, etc., doing something, rather than just a portion of it, so that the experience can be enjoyed to a greater degree. Why don't we pack a picnic, head to the trailhead early, and make a day of it hiking around the area? I think we should all split the cost of a villa near the beach and make a week of it!

Fig. to spend the entire evening or night doing something. (Especially when one had intended to devote only a little time to the outing.) We went out to have a bite to eat and were having such a good time that we decided to make a night of it. I did not want to make a night of it, so I left early.
