inch (one's) way across (something)

To move across something in very small increments or very gradually. We all watched in awe as the man carefully inched his way across the tightrope. I couldn't take my eyes off the hornet as it inched its way across the windowsill next to me. The dog must have picked up on some strange scent because she's inching across the yard like she's hunting something.

to creep slowly across something. The little green worm inched its way across the branch. It inched itself across the leaf.
