1. In a position in which something is behind one. Jimmy is the shortest, so he should stand in front for the photo. Mom, go stand in front of your award-winning garden! Don't stand in front of the window for the photo, the lighting will be terrible.
2. At the entrance or front façade of a building. Most shopping centers have the parking lot in front. Please stand in front until I get there. There were some shady guys loitering in front, so I snuck around to the back entrance.
3. Physically positioned as the first or leader of a group. As your tour guide, I'll walk in front, and you can all just follow me. Here they come down the home stretch, and the underdog is still in front! You need your sister to walk in front of you so you can keep an eye on her.
4. Having the lead in some contest. The visiting team has been in front for the entire first half. The candidate has been in front since day one. I'm not surprised Mona was in front the whole time—she's the fastest runner in our class.
