1. Thoroughly; down to the last detail. I've been studying this material for weeks now, so I know it in and out. I know this book in and out because I've read it about a million times. You need to know your lines in and out because we won't be using scripts at the next rehearsal.
2. Alternating between being at or in a location and being gone from it. The boss has been in and out of the office all day. The kids are in and out so much that they're constantly letting bugs into the house. Mom's been in and out all day, but she said she'd be home for dinner.
