In a pile, usually a messy or disorganized one. The phrase can also be applied to someone who has fallen heavily or clumsily. Why are all of your clothes in a heap out in the hallway? Clean this mess up! Katrina slipped and landed in a heap at the bottom of the steps. The drunkard took a swing at the security guard and collapsed in a heap on the pavement.
