proverb The absence of hope causes one to feel the greatest degree of sadness or despair possible. A: "I have to hope they'll find a cure—it's the only thing that keeps me going." B: "I'm sure. If it were not for hope, the heart would break." Of course he thinks they'll get back together and everything will be like old times. If it were not for hope, the heart would break. If it were not for hope, the heart would break—that's why I choose to be an optimist.
