Used to ask a question about the manner in which something has happened or will happen while emphasizing one's shock, anger, disgust, incredulity, etc. Often used rhetorically. A: "You're going to pay for this!" B: "It was an accident! How in God's name was I supposed to know that would happen?" How in God's name did such a blatant error slip past our copy-editors? The car needs a new engine, but how in God's name are we going to pay for it?
