hope (something) sticks

To wish for something, especially a business strategy, to be successful, especially in spite of a lack of confidence, planning, or effort. Look, we need a proper marketing strategy. We won't get anywhere if we just throw everything we come up with at the wall and hope something sticks. This new subscription service we're trying out is a pretty big gamble, so I hope it sticks! I want evidence that this approach is going to grow the business. It's not enough to just hope something sticks.
