1. To remain securely adhered (to something). I didn't think the makeshift weld would do the trick, but I'm happy to say that it's holding fast. No, tape won't hold fast in this case—you need to use a stronger adhesive. Well, if that wood glue continues to hold fast, I think we've solved our problem!
2. To remain determined, stalwart, and unyielding, as in one's position or opinion. Though it may be hard, we must hold fast in our pledge to environmental reform. I've held fast to my principles my whole life, and I don't intend to compromise them now with your gang of thugs! Aunt Betty's the furthest thing from an undecided voter—she always holds fast to her political party.
