To upset or overwhelm someone, especially suddenly or unexpectedly. Primarily heard in UK. News of my father's sudden death completely hit me for six. I had no idea they were having marital problems, so it hit me for six when they told me they were divorcing. It hit us all for six when we heard our good friend was transferring to another school.
