1. A phrase that precedes an explanation. A: "But why's your mom so mad at you?" B: "OK, here's the deal—she caught me sneaking out again last night." Here's the deal: the publisher moved up the deadline, so I need to see an edited manuscript as soon as possible. A: "Wait, what? Can you make sense of this news story?" B: "Yeah, here's the deal—these people had a pet octopus, and it got loose from their house."
2. A phrase that precedes the presentation of an idea or plan. Here's the deal: I'll distract Mom while you grab the cookies. A: "OK, here's the deal—" B: "No, no, stop right there—I'm not getting involved in another one of your dumb plans." A: "I hear you've had some sort of brilliant idea that will keep us from failing the class?" B: "Yeah, here's the deal—we're going to steal the test answers!"
