To be able move freely around an entire area. After being cramped in an apartment for years, our dog loves having the run of the big back yard at our new house. It's nice to have the run of a whole house again, after being stuck in a hospital room for weeks. Our three temps will have the run of the place next week when we go on our team-building retreat.

give somebody/get/have the ˈrun of something

(informal) allow somebody/be allowed to use freely a house, etc. that belongs to another person: He was very kind and let us have the run of his house while he was at work.
