have (one) on toast

To have power over one. Primarily heard in UK. Of course they'll heed our demands—we have them on toast. A: "If there's already multiple offers on the house, we'll have to offer more than we budgeted." B: "I know, the seller has us on toast." Once the gangsters were able to blackmail Susan, they had her on toast.
