To have an additional option, skill, or ability available to one. At least if you get your degree, you'll have more strings to your bow if your football career is short-lived. A: "I'm thinking of taking up French." B: "Go for it! It's always good to have more strings to your bow." With all this varied job experience under my belt, I have more strings to my bow if this particular career path isn't to my liking.
