have it on (one's) toes
have it on (one's) toes
To run away or flee. Primarily heard in UK. We had it on our toes when we saw that huge fire raging in the distance. No, the cops didn't catch us at the party. We heard the sirens and had it on our toes, thank goodness! You would have it on your toes too if you turned around and saw a bear in the distance!
