To speak to one privately, often to issue a suggestion or warning. I'm confident that that intern will stop slacking off once I have a word in his ear. I did have a word in Tom's ear about that part of the presentation, but he wouldn't listen. And, sure enough, the boss didn't like it. Sir, may I have a word in your ear? I don't think you should dismiss her account of the events so summarily.
