have a leg up

To be in a position of advantage (over someone else). One must always be looking for ways to have a leg up if one wants to succeed in this business. I've been practicing all summer long so I can have a leg up on the other players in my league. When I saw that my opponent was struggling to counter my opening moves, I knew I had a leg up.
