hash slinger

A cook or a waitress, especially at a diner or cheap restaurant. ("Hash," in this sense, refers to a dish or stew of chopped meat and vegetables, not hashish.) Primarily heard in US. I worked as a hash slinger for several years to pay my way through college. You'll just be a hash slinger in this tiny town. If you really want to become a chef, you need to go somewhere else. I'm sick of being a hash slinger and having to get truck drivers coffee and pie at 3:00 AM.
