hang up (one's) fiddle

To retire from something. I've been at the company for 30 years, so it's time for me to hang up my fiddle. You're an adult now, and you can't stay out all weekend—it's time to hang up your fiddle and ditch the party scene. I'm awfully lucky for a hockey player—I didn't have to hang up my fiddle until I was 39.
