hang tough on (something)

To maintain one's determination in a difficult situation. Hang tough on your decision, and don't let anyone in the company discount your authority. The defendant is a heck of an actor. I really hope the jury hangs tough on this case and slaps him with the jail time he deserves. Every new police commissioner vows to hang tough on crime, but nothing ever seems to change around here.
