To be left in a very difficult, troublesome, or problematic situation, often as a result of someone else's actions. You really left us hanging in the wind when you decided to take your vacation right before the project's deadline! The government's sudden decision not to continue funding the program has left many residents to hang in the wind. David regrets leaving you all to hang in the wind, but he had a medical emergency that required an immediate leave of absence.
