hands-on

1. Very closely involved in the day-to-day activities of a business, organization, or department. I try not to be too hands-on with my employees because I know how irritating micro-managing can be. Of course the owner isn't very hands-on anymore—he's 90 years old! The boss is only hands-on like this when she thinks we're in danger of missing a deadline.
2. Involving actual, practical use of something, such as a tool, piece of equipment, or program. Unfortunately, it wasn't a hands-on demonstration, so I didn't get to test the company's new computer model. You can read all the books in the world about computer programming, but without any hands-on experience, you'll never fully understand it. My explanation will make more sense once you get some hands-on experience using this machine at the gym.
