half-asleep

1. In a state between waking and sleep; close to being asleep. I was half-asleep when I heard the loud thump from downstairs, so I wasn't sure if it was real or if I had imagined it. I started drifting off during my afternoon lecture, so I was half-asleep for most of it. A: "Dad was half-asleep at the gate when they announced our flight was boarding." B: "Thank goodness you were there with him!"
2. Extremely tired or fatigued. Sorry, my daughter kept waking me up last night, so I'm still half-asleep this morning. That four-hour hike was so exhausting. I was half-asleep by the time we got back to the car! I hate pulling an all-nighter because then I'm half-asleep the whole next day.
