good money after bad

Additional and excessive costs spent in the attempt to recoup initial losses. Used especially after the verb "throw." I thought I was saving money by buying a used bike, but between all the repairs and new parts, I've thrown good money after bad just trying to get the thing in working order. A: "We could hire another consultant to come up with a strategy to salvage the project." B: "I don't know. At this point it just feels like good money after bad." Instead of cutting corners on the project and then having to throw good money after bad to try to bring it up to snuff, why don't you just invest the appropriate time and money from the get-go.
