To make an extra or deliberate effort to do something. Oh, you didn't have to go to the bother of preparing the guest bedroom for me—I could have just slept on the couch! A: "I see you didn't go to the bother of doing the dishes last night." B: "I was just so tired!" Ah, don't go to the bother of making me lunch—I'm too nervous to eat anyway.
