To endure and overcome an especially difficult, trying, or perilous experience or situation. After going through hell and back with this illness, she's finally in remission. I went through hell and back when my daughter died. The grief was almost too much to bear at times. First the layoff, then the divorce—the poor guy has gone through hell and back over the last year.
