1. To get into a physical fight with someone, as or as if in a boxing match. Tom went a few rounds with the school bully and ended up with a black eye. After training for the boxing film, the actor has claimed that he wants to go a few rounds with the heavyweight champion next. Hey, that guy is a total jerk. You do not have to go a few rounds with him to "defend my honor," OK?
2. To get into an argument or debate with someone. The prime minister looked like a fool after he went a few rounds with a professor in a televised debate. Why do you two always have to go a few rounds with each other? We all know you're never going to agree on this issue. Please do not go a few rounds with any of my family members about politics, OK?
