give out (to one) about (someone or something)

1. To gripe, complain, or sulk about someone or something (to one). Primarily heard in Ireland. Don't give out to me about how much homework you've got—it's not my problem! Some customers are giving out about the new waiter. I never find it useful to give out to friends about annoyances I can't change.
2. To scold or chastise one about someone or something. Primarily heard in Ireland. He spent the whole meeting giving out about our quarterly sales figures. Don't give out to Brian about something he couldn't have controlled. A: "Ooh, Mom and Dad are going to give out to you about coming home after curfew." B: "I know, but I can't do anything about it now, can I?"
