give it the old college try

To make an earnest attempt at some activity or pursuit. Just give it the old college try, and I think you'll find that it's easier than you expected. I gave it the old college try, but I've come to accept that knitting just isn't for me. I wasn't thrilled about having to use pastels instead of paints, but I gave it the old college try, and I'm actually happy with how it turned out.
