give (something) a try

To try something (often for the first time as a means of forming an opinion about it). A: "Do you want to try driving my car, to see how you like it?" B: "Yeah, sure, I'll give it a try." I have given hiking a try in the past—it's just not for me. I know you've never done this kind of work before, but give it a try and see how you do.
