give (one) a pass

To accept one's improper actions or behavior without anger or punishment. I'm not happy with his sass either, but his mom just died. Give the kid a pass. Sally's usually very well behaved, so I gave her a pass on this one. You gave me a pass at the time, and I really appreciate it—and I always want to apologize for how I lashed out at the time.
