To become aware through indirect means, especially of something being kept secret. Federal agents have gotten wind that a major financial institution has been laundering money for the cartel. A: "Tom found a stash of gold hidden at the old abandoned quarry!" B: "Quick, let's go get it before anyone else gets wind!" If Mom gets wind of this prank we're planning, we'll be grounded for the rest of the summer.
