Primarily heard in UK.
1. To be promptly and unceremoniously dismissed from one's job, role, or position. I heard Bill got the bird for screwing up the Robertson accounts. I can't believe I got the bird after five loyal years at this company! I'm going to get the bird if the boss finds out that printing error was my fault.
2. To receive verbal derision, such as hissing or booing. Typically aimed at a performer or athlete. That player sure got the bird after he dropped the ball. The band sounded so terrible that they promptly got the bird from the audience. After allowing three goals to start the game, the goalie got the bird when he finally made a save.
