1. To be promptly and unceremoniously dismissed from one's job, role, or position. I heard Bill got the bird for screwing up the Robertson accounts. 2. To receive verbal derision, such as hissing or booing. Typically aimed at a performer or athlete. That player sure got the bird after he dropped the ball. The band sounded so terrible that they promptly got the bird from the audience. After allowing three goals to start the game, the goalie got the bird when he finally made a save.
