get close to (someone or something)

1. To become near in physical proximity to someone or something. You're getting too close to the curb, Jen! You need to pull the car out into the road a little. Please don't get so close to me! Uncle Pete can only hear out of one ear anymore, so I bet that's why he stands so close to everyone these days.
2. To become similar to someone or something, as in attributes or abilities. You may still be the best kicker on the team, but Darrell is starting to get close to you! The Shmapple myPhone has long been the gold standard of smartphone, but the new flagship device from Spikerosoft is getting close to it in terms of functionality and aesthetics. If you would just practice more, you could get close to the kids in the choir who get solos.
3. To develop an intimate involvement, association, or relationship with someone or something. I've gotten very close to this project over the years, so it has been a little hard for me to relinquish control to others. You don't want to get too close to them right now, Senator. The optics from their tax scandal would be very bad for your reelection campaign. Patty and I didn't really like each other when we were kids, but I've been getting quite close to her in recent years.
