Because something is lacking or missing. For want of vegetable oil, I added olive oil to the recipe and hoped for the best. If you want to maintain your good mood, then don't talk to Kristina. She is, for want of a better word, a sourpuss. For want of a better option, we're going to have to fly out at 4:00 AM.
