1. For a very long period of time, possibly forever. I'm sorry, but you're stuck with me. As my husband, you have me for keeps. I know it's a hideous table, but it's also a family heirloom, so we've got it for keeps. No, you can't bring your cat back to the shelter! Once you adopt a pet, you have it for keeps.
2. For one to maintain or take ownership of. I would have returned the mug to you sooner, but I thought you gave it to me for keeps. What, you thought I bought this truck? No, I don't have it for keeps, it's just a rental. There's been a lot of tantrums because the kids are too young to understand that when you give something away to someone, it's for keeps.
3. With determination to do or complete something. This is it, girls, the last game of the season. So go out there and play for keeps. I hope you studied for keeps because your score on this test will determine your whole future. Wow, Bridget really ran for keeps in that race! I didn't know she had it in her.
