To remove something with the use of a file. A noun or pronoun can be used between "file" and "off." Is it safe to file off these calluses on my feet? I need to file off the ragged edge of this nail before it catches on my pantyhose. Someone filed off the serial number of the stolen car, so there's no way to track its original owner.
