everything except the kitchen sink

Nearly everything one can reasonably imagine; many different things, often to the point of excess or redundancy. After the bank foreclosed on our house, we had to pack up everything except the kitchen sink into our truck and drive across the state to my mother's house. We were only going to be camping for two nights, but she still insisted on bringing everything except the kitchen sink along with us. Voters don't trust that candidate because he's been promising everything except the kitchen sink to them, and they know that's not realistic.

1. Excluding someone or something. Everyone turned their project in on time except for Brian. I'm having a pretty good day—well, except for that boring meeting this morning. I'm so jealous—everybody is going on a vacation this summer except for me.

People say present company excepted when they say something about other people, to show that they are not referring to the people or person they are with. Men are hopeless at expressing their feelings, present company excepted, of course. Note: This expression is usually used when people are saying something critical or unpleasant about other people.
