enlist for (something)

1. To voluntarily sign up for something. A noun or pronoun can be used between "enlist" and "for." Did you hear that Jim wants to enlist for military service? He really feels compelled to fight for his country. If you think teaching is such a thankless job, then why did you enlist for it? I didn't enlist for the army—I only served in Vietnam because I got drafted.
2. To sign someone else up for something. A noun or pronoun can be used between "enlist" and "for." I hope you don't mind, but I enlisted you for the clean-up crew after the dance. We need all the help we can get! I enlisted Sasha for the talent show this year. She may be shy, but she's a great singer! Please don't just enlist me for these committees—talk to me about it first.
