elixir of life

1. A mythical substance believed to restore one's youth, cure all ills, or provide everlasting life. The snake oil salesman claimed to have an elixir of life that could cure any disease, but in reality they were just bottles of sugar water flavored with anise. The guild of alchemists spent decades trying to find out how to distill the elixir of life and achieve immortality. Anyone who vows that their product is the "elixir of life" is a liar trying to make a sale, OK?
2. By extension, any drink that one considers to be especially revitalizing or vivifying. Ah, coffee—the elixir of life! I don't know how I would get through the day without it. My dad always had a whiskey at the end of the day, which he called his elixir of life. A cold glass of lemonade sure is the elixir of life on a hot summer day!
