drink to (someone or something)
1. To drink in honor of someone or something; to toast someone or something. Let's drink to our health! Tonight, we drink to Captain Murphy. At the start of the reception, we all drank to the happy couple.
2. To drink alcohol to some extreme point or level. This is an important event for me, honey, so please don't drink to excess and make a fool of yourself. We were all drinking to oblivion, hammering back as much cheap beer and vodka as possible. We had to take a cab home because our designated driver not only drank, but drank to excess.
3. To drink alcohol in order to accomplish something (by being drunk). Lots of people drink to forget their problems, but their problems are always still there when they sober up. I started drinking to ease the pain from my injuries, and before long I was drunk for the better part of the day. I'd rather go to therapy and really heal than drink to "deal" with my grief.
