To exaggerate or overstate. Boy, she's really drawing the longbow—I wouldn't believe a word she says. This is a serious play, so please don't draw the longbow out on stage, OK? My Uncle Mike was always one to draw the longbow and go on about the crazy adventures and mishaps from his time overseas. I knew most of it wasn't true, but it was always entertaining to listen to!

The longbow was the national weapon of England from the 14th century until the introduction of firearms, and prowess in its use was highly prized. The phrase has been used in this metaphorical sense since the mid 17th century.
