dogleg
1. noun A sharp curve or bend, as in a road. Slow down, there's a dogleg up ahead! You'll have to take a dogleg at the bottom of the hill, just past the school. There have been an unfortunate number of accidents here. People don't adhere to the low speed limit because they can't see that there's a dogleg up ahead.
2. noun A hole on a golf course in which the fairway angles abruptly. The ninth hole is a particularly tricky dogleg that has so far proven treacherous for today's competitors. Please, I can barely get the ball into a hole that's straight ahead, let alone one with a dogleg! The dogleg on the 12th hole is intense. Everyone in our party has hit their balls into the rough on that one.
3. verb To make sharp curve or bend, as of or on a road. The path doglegs really suddenly a little further on, so drive carefully. When you've got a road that doglegs like this, it seems that providing adequate lighting is the least the township could do. Sheesh! It's certainly not ideal for drivers to have to deal with slippery conditions on a road that doglegs.
