dog-ear

1. noun The corner of a page of a book that has been turned down to mark one's place. I always leave a dog-ear in my textbooks to indicate an important page when I'm studying. A: "You need to start reading at the part with the dog-ear." B: "Hey, thanks!" What are you thinking, putting dog-ears in a library book like that?
2. verb To fold over the corner of a page of a book to mark one's place. I really hate it when people dog-ear their books. It ruins the look of the page! You won't be able to resell that book for much if you keep dog-earing it like that. Hmm, whoever had this copy of Lady Chatterley's Lover before me dog-eared all the racy parts, it seems.
