To fight or argue with someone or something. Once politics are mentioned at family dinners, everyone starts doing battle. Oh, I've done battle with the principal about my curriculum many times before—I'm not worried. I wish I didn't have to do battle with my kids every night to get them to do their homework.

fight, compete or argue (with somebody): A group of local parents have decided to join battle with the council about their decision to close two of the town’s schools.
