To make only a hasty, careless, or superficial effort toward the completion of some task. I didn't have time to clean the entire house before my parents arrived, so I just did it with a lick and a promise. I can tell the intern only did this data entry with a lick and a promise. Half of the content is either missing or incorrect! A: "Have you seen those shelves? Any amount of dusting would be an improvement." B: "So I can just do it with a lick and a promise?" A: "Yeah, sure."
