do (something) for the best
To do something with the hope or intention of producing a positive outcome. I did that for the best—I really wasn't trying to hurt your feelings. It's not like I wanted to break up with Tom. I only did it for the best, because our relationship was going nowhere. Please don't think that I'm criticizing your work just to make you feel bad. I do it for the best—so that you develop and grow as a writer.
