To submit or yield to someone or something. I really need to defer to your mother on this one—she's in charge of all the Thanksgiving plans. Well, I'm not the manager, so I'll have to defer to Carrie on questions of staffing. My wife has our calendar all mapped out, so I have to defer to her on questions of scheduling.
